The Essential Postpartum List

Updated: Aug 20, 2023

There are many lists out there, recommending parents all kinds of things. But I find these list very consumption-driven, trying to sell mothers items that are not necessary, at least at the very beginning.

I find it is best to gather the absolute essentials and then buy / borrow / rent items as you go, as you uncover your parenting style and as new needs arise.

For Momma:

For vaginal healing:

  • Menstruation pads, dipped in water and witch hazel (store several in the freezer)

  • Disposable underwear (best to get slightly larger sized ones than your regular sizing for comfort)

  • Large menstruation pads for heavy periods (which you will transition to after the disposable underwear)

  • Healing oil for your perineum

  • Peri bottle (for cleaning your vaginal area)

  • Hemorrhoids creams (that are compatible postpartum)

  • Sitz bath (or shallow, wide tub) and epsom salts

If you are nursing:

  • Lanolin or a substitute for cracked nipples

  • Nursing pads (if you are leaking)

  • Nursing bra (only if you feel you need the support)

  • Frozen peas and cabbage (for engorgement)

If you have had a c-section:

  • Stool (or stacked books) for the toilet

  • Over-the-counter stool softeners

  • Enema kit

  • Extra pillows for nursing station

  • Stool or ottoman to keep legs up while nursing

  • Prepped nursing, changing, bathing stations so everything is at arms reach

  • Apps - grocery, deliveries

Other items:

  • Meals prepared and in the freezer

  • Healthy snacks

  • A large water bottle that you can open with one hand

  • Nursing cloths (best to purchase several as they are very handy)

  • Nursing pillow or a series of pillows that you can arrange for comfort

  • Contact numbers (lactation consultant, osteopaths, pediatricians, mother groups, etc.)

For baby:

  • A side crib or bassinet (or whatever sleeping arrangement you have decided on)

  • Sheets for bed including a wetness protector

  • Car seat

  • Disposable sheets for changing diapers (also useful if you have a set up changing station as the disposable sheets protect the mattress)

  • Diapers and wipes

  • Diaper rash cream or a healing oil

  • Baby clothing, including a hat

  • Cloth baby wrap (this is a great first carrier to keep your baby close)

And important for every new mother, organizing support is essential. Whether that is a hiring a postpartum doula, or creating an excel list of all the tasks you need help with and sharing it with friends and family. Support is key!

Let's Talk

I would love to hear from you! Whether you are before your birth or already in the postpartum period - its never to early (or late) to reach out.

I believe birth as an intensely felt, uniquely empowering transformational experience and together we positively impact the future of our planet by promoting gentle, loving pregnancy, birth and postpartum practices. In this vision, I do not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, religion (creed), national origin (ancestry), gender, gender expression, sexual orientation or identity, age, size, neurodiversity, disability, education, marital status, or military status, in any activities or operations – I welcome all.
